There are still 7 owners who haven't yet voiced their expectations.
No matter which way we go, there will be owners disappointed. The expectations are very varied, but basically fall under one of 5 mindsets. I will post these 5 below as well as a few comments that explain why the owners feel the way they do:
5 owners want to move to timed rounds IMMEDIATELY.
I choose the fastest possible option. However my bigger concern is that people knew that in this process their actions would effect 31 other people yet feel its ok to take a huge amount of time to make their pick. If they knew they couldn't make their pick within a reasonable amount of time they shouldn't have signed up.
we're only picking 20 players - 1 a day should not be beyond expectations.
I'd like to use the time slots that you had posted along with the teams we drafted. It was part of the reason I took the team I did.
I am certainly on the side that finds the continued untimed rounds frustrating. I'd like the process sped up a bit sooner rather than later. We could do a day of drafting, followed by a day of break until say round 10. That way everyone still has time to adjust what they need to adjust. And we can find a rhythm. What i fear is that if we continue to go this slow then even owners that are ready to choose will stop checking regularly and the drafts will take forever.
4 owners want to be done by Halloween at the latest.
I think 4 weeks is sufficient. 1 more week to finish the third round. then I'd like to get on the schedule. That way we aren't wasting time checking in. getting online once a day shouldn't be too much to ask. everyone does it anyway. and with set schedule, we know when we can pick/or plan proxy picks.
I have been in draft leagues before and believe that if they are not timed it becomes very frustrating for many.
I don't mind the untimed rounds if people are going to be considerate of the others and pick in timely fashion. We had a great run last night which is what I expect with this group. But as you know, all it takes is a couple of people to ruin the draft for everyone. The untimed rounds were put in place to get a handle over the process and player pool, not so people could sleep on it, not check in, or hold up the draft for any other reason.
8 owners chose Thanksgiving as a deadline.
I think we need to set the deadline of completing the draft before Thanksgiving. Then take the holiday weekend off, and start the WIS clock after that.
I would expect us to be able to get through at least 2-3 rounds a week. That would mean the draft would take about ~2 months to do.
I think 2 months would be my limit.
I'd rather stay untimed as long as possible, but only if everyone starts being more considerate and the delays get much more infrequent. We can allow for untimed rounds a bit longer, but know that as T'giving draws closer we might have to go to a schedule to get the last few rounds of the draft done.
3 owners said by the end of the calender year.
I know I get an email on my phone whenever I get a sitemail. As long as everyone sitemails the next two up after the pick, the draft should roll as is.
I like the idea of staying untimed for a few more rounds. Or just go to a draft timer instead of a time slot. Like a 4 hour draft window with the timer being shut off between midnight and 7am est. I have been a part of 32 team fantasy football teams draft like that and have no problem completing within 2 to 3 weeks. I personally have no problem with the draft taking a long time, but I'd like to see us start the season by the 1st of the year.
Jan 1st. My ideal would be 12 hours from last pick as a window. Checking in twice a day when your pick is coming up isn't bad.
my position is that we should take our time with the first few rounds (maybe 5 or so rounds). Then maybe we can pick up the pace a little - but I think we should give people ample time even then - perhaps an hour or 2 to pick. This is new for everyone and we should take our time and do it right.
5 owners want to stay untimed regardless of how long it takes.
Personally, I don't mind the slow pace if it means no one gets skipped. I love the draft and so stretching it out longer only makes it that much more fun and engrossing to me. I don't care how long the draft takes.
I don't have any time frame preferences right now because I think the pace has been fine but I don't want the draft to be rushed, months are better than weeks, slower is better for me.
I think that as long as we're getting a few picks per day (say 1-2 per game cycle) then I'm not worried. I don't really care how long it takes.
So you can see that there will be no way to please everyone, but I am leaning towards a compromise that centers around what seems to be the front runner so far - T'giving as a deadline.
I want to point out a few things that may allow you to take a different look at how you feel about that decision.
To those who think it's been slow going, it really hasn't been as bad as it seems.
Remember we didn't officially start until Monday the 29th. Rising had a real life catastrophe and was unable to post until 10:14PM. We were still able to get 6 picks in, before we came to a grinding halt which lasted 19 hours. When we finally resumed, we got through 12 picks in 21 hours and would have done even better but missed Rising by 16 minutes on Wednesday night/Thursday morning. That resulted in a 26 hour delay, but when Rising finally got settled in we started again Friday morning at 8:22AM, and got in 8 total picks in less than 10 hours before another 6 hour delay.
If we can eliminate these really long delays during the normal drafting hours (8-Midnight Eastern) we should be fine going un-timed for a few more rounds. I can't stress enough how important it is for owners to keep a top 10 or so regularly updated. We are 5 days in and by now owners should have a decent handle on the draft pool.
To those of you who do not want to go to a schedule at any time, please remember that plan was plainly laid out as a distinct and probable reality before you chose to accept the invitation.
To those who want to get it done ASAP, please remember that I specifically said "Regardless of how good it goes I think once the world is actually "full", we will be AT LEAST 6 weeks away from actually hitting the approve button".
This was accounting for 2 weeks of player pool review and then, AT THE VERY LEAST, 4 weeks to complete the draft. We are still on pace to be in that 6-8 week time frame.
To those who picked a franchise in large part due to the posted potential time-slots, I had posted in the Q&A section (which I continue to encourage everyone to read and try to keep up with), "I would advise against this. If we, as a group are as responsive as you all have demonstrated to be so far, we may not ever use that draft schedule. I think it is PROBABLE that we will at some point, but I, personally wouldn't weigh that factor very heavily at all. Additionally we will have 5 owners helping with the draft process who will make proxy picks for anyone not able to do so.
So I want to apologize for any misunderstandings and any feelings of disappointment but as you can plainly see there is NO WAY to accommodate everyone's expectations.
The best I can do is try to choose the path that is best for the world as a whole. This means more untimed rounds for the near future with no plans on going to the schedule yet, because I really do not want people getting skipped over if we can help it, and I think that minus the two big delays and Rising's personal RL issue we have done remarkably well.
Having said that, now that Rising is settled in I expect no major delays going forward. If you are an owner who wants to stick to untimed rounds, my best advice to you is DO NOT be the cause of any major delays.
IF I am shown to be mistaken in trusting that from this point going forward ALL OWNERS will show a commitment to be respectful and considerate of each other's time, and we continue to experience major delays going forward we will immediately, beginning with the following round, go to that posted schedule.
